Articles of Confederation / U.S. Constitution

The Articles of Confederation was ratified in March 1781.  Read the document and make a list of what this agreement did and did not allow the country (alliance of states) to do.

Live with the news:  Assign students the role of field news reporters to report on these events live:  

(a) The ratification of the U.S. Constitution

         The live report should cover:

  • background information
  • the first meeting
  • the debates
  • the issues debated
  • the compromise reached
  • the signers from the various states

         (b) The Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution.  
             
Have students list the freedoms guaranteed by the
              Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Discuss with the students why these freedoms are important.  Have students illustrate these principal rights. 

Have students outline the strengths of the government as provided in the Constitution.
