Craftsmen at Poplar Forest strive to use traditional tools and methods as much as possible in the restoration. Here carpenters are creating channels in the gutter joists that will drain water from the yet-to-be-built roof. Carpenters use a mallet and chisel or adze to create the channels, and a plane to smooth them. The two carpenters can complete two joists per week.
