Archaeology at Poplar Forest

Through the years, the house and landscape at Poplar Forest have changed dramatically from Jefferson's time. Much research is needed to understand how to authentically restore the house and develop plans for the landscape.  Research likewise is needed to understand how the plantation worked under Jefferson. Archaeologists play a major role in that research.  They conduct excavations, examine artifacts and study documents to collect information and evidence.

There are three areas of archaeological study at Poplar Forest:

In the 2008 season, archaeologists will continue excavating Site B, the site of probable Jefferson-era buildings discovered in recent years.  They will be piecing clues together to develop an understanding of what happened here in the past, with the help of field school students and two new paid summer research interns in Historical Archaeology.
