Winter Weekend Reflections: At Home with Mr. Jefferson
January 21 - March 12
Saturdays and Sundays, January 21 through Sunday, March 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (last admittance at 3:00 p.m.)
Spend winter weekends relaxing and reflecting at Thomas Jefferson’s retreat. Read a book in the campeche chair in the parlor overlooking the south lawn as Jefferson once did; enjoy complimentary coffee or hot chocolate in the restored kitchen; or just explore the house and grounds at your own pace.
NEW THIS YEAR:
- Learn about the families––from the Jeffersons to the Dr. James A. Johnson family, the last private owners––who lived in Poplar Forest for the past 200 years, and the adjustments they made to the house to fit their lifestyles.
- See a new exhibit on Burwell Colbert, Jefferson’s enslaved manservant who always accompanied him to Poplar Forest. Burwell’s sleeping area has been reconstructed in the lower level, directly below Jefferson’s bedchamber, where displays will tell Burwell’s story and look at his relationship to Jefferson and his time at Poplar Forest.
- Thirty-minute guided tours will be offered for visitors who’d like an overview of the changes made to the house. Displays and photographs will document how former occupants used each room and invite visitors to imagine how they might furnish them. Exhibits will highlight the changes made to the house through the years, as well as plans for the new Poplar Forest Parkway entrance road.
Admission to Winter Reflections is $16 for Adults; $14 for Seniors (ages 65+) and Active Military (Must show ID); $8 for College Students (Must show ID) and Youth ages 12–18; $4 for Youth ages 6–11; and Free for Members and Children under age 6.
