Poplar Forest welcomes motor coaches and other group tours. Groups of 10 or more must be scheduled in advance. Teachers wishing to schedule a field trip should visit Field Trips to learn about on-site educational programs and their costs.
Group Admission
Groups of 20 persons or more receive a discounted rate.
Adults/Seniors $6.50
College Students (with ID) $3.00
Youth (elementary to high school) $2.00
Tour leader and bus driver receive complimentary tickets with groups of at least 20.
If the group drops below 20 on the day of the tour, the full admission rate will be charged.
Maps and Directions
Buses must use the service entrance on Foxhall Drive due to size and weight restrictions over bridges on the main road. Directions to the service entrance are included in the group tour confirmation packet.
Details
Tours last about 40 minutes. The distance from the start of the tour to the house is 200 feet over a lawn with no sidewalk or paved road. There are several chairs in each room for visitor use.
There is no lift or elevator into the house. There are 7 stairs to the front door. Visitors may use wheelchairs or walkers inside the house. However, staff cannot assist disabled visitors up the stairs. Please call ahead to ask about special arrangements.
House Tours
Visitors should not lean against walls or doors. The house has bow-backed Windsor chairs for those who are unable to stand for extended periods of time.
Public Transportation
There is no public transportation to Poplar Forest .
Backpacks
No bags or backpacks may be carried on a visitor's back during house tours.
Photography
Photography and videography are not permitted inside the house. Still photography and video recording for personal use only are permitted on the grounds.
Smoking
Smoking is prohibited in all buildings and on the grounds of Poplar Forest. A designated smoking area is located near the visitor parking area.
Pets
Pets are welcome on the grounds at Poplar Forest. Pets must be leashed at all times and are not allowed (excluding service animals) in any buildings. Please clean up after your pet.
Food and Drink
Picnic tables are available on site. A drink machine is available. Visitors may purchase a small assortment of snacks in the Museum Shop. Food, drink and chewing gum are not permitted in the house.
Cell Phones
Please turn off or silence cell phones while touring the house.
Visiting with Children
Strollers are permitted on the grounds but not in the house. Parents of active or restless young children may be asked to take turns touring the house, as a courtesy to other visitors.
Severe Weather
Virginia can be subject to sudden storms with lightening. Please take shelter in the lower level of the house, admissions/museum shop or exhibit buildings. Do not take shelter under trees during storms where you could be subject to injuries.
Restrooms
Restrooms are located adjacent to the admissions/museum shop and are handicapped accessible.
