Poplar Forest is Thomas Jefferson's secluded plantation and retreat home, now a National Historic Landmark. Undergoing award-winning restoration and archaeology, Poplar Forest offers tours, special events, and school outreach programs. 2010 Calendar of Events
April 1 Poplar Forest Opens for the Season
April 3 Visiting Artist, Gene Villiva
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the Museum Shop, visiting artist Gene Villiva of Eugenio, LLC will feature signed copies from the “Thomas Jefferson, Architect” series of medallions. The series depicts Poplar Forest, Monticello, the Rotunda, the Virginia State Capitol, and the newly released Jefferson Memorial. Each medallion is custom designed and executed in metal by master engravers in Germany.
April 10 Book Signing, Jane Baber White
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Author Jane Baber White, Director Emerita of Lynchburg's Old City Cemetery, will sign copies of her new book, Once Upon a Time...A Cemetery Story in the Poplar Forest Museum Shop.
April 14 Jefferson’s Birthday Celebration
11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Celebrate the anniversary of Jefferson’s birth on April 13, 1743. Cake served!
April 20 Virginia Garden Week: "Restoring Jefferson’s Poplar Forest Landscape"
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. House and grounds open for tours. Guided landscape tours led by Jack Gary, Director of Archaeology and Landscapes at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Reduced admission price and Museum Shop discount with Garden Day ticket. Reservations required.
April 24 Conversations with Thomas Jefferson
Join in conversation as President Jefferson hosts fellow Virginia, Patrick Henry. Afternoon tea and matinee at 2:15 p.m. (reception at 1:30); Evening performance at 8:00 p.m. (reception and tours at 7:00).

April 24 Book Signing, Rob McDonald
Noon to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Photographer Rob McDonald’s latest book, Poplar Forest, is a collection of photographs taken of Thomas Jefferson’s personal retreat and its unique surrounding landscape. Distinctive in every way, Poplar Forest will be published in 300 hand-sewn limited edition copies.
May 8 Book Signing, Martin Clagett
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Author Martin Clagett will sign copies of his latest book Scientific Jefferson: Revealed in the Poplar Forest Museum Shop. Published in 2009, Scientific Jefferson: Revealed explores how science shaped Thomas Jefferson's views on politics, religion, economics, and social developments in America.
May 15 Architectural Restoration Talk and Tour
11:00 am and 2:00 p.m. In celebration of National Historic Preservation Month, Poplar Forest presents guided tours of Jefferson's retreat with Director of Architectural Restoration, Travis McDonald, followed by slide lecture. Reservations required.
July 4 Independence Day Celebration
11:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Musical performances, dancing, historical entertainment, games, living history demonstrations, storytelling and an evocative reading of the Declaration of Independence at 1:30 p.m. Adults, $5.00. Under 16, free. Tours of the house are available for an additional $9.00.
September 25 Smithsonian Museum Day
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission with Smithsonian Museum Day Card. Hand-on-History open. Hearth-cooking demonstrations in the kitchen.
October 9 Archaeology Open House
Tours at 11:15 a.m., 12:15, 1:15 and 2:15 p.m. Archaeologists share their latest discoveries at the current archaeological site with a visit to the archaeology lab.
October 9 Circling the Globe
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lynchburg Amateur Radio Club transmits from Poplar Forest.
November 20 Thomas Jefferson Wine Festival
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Celebrate Jefferson's passion for wine! Featuring Virginia wineries, artisans and local food purveyors, musical entertainment and much more. Tickets and additional information available Summer 2010 at www.poplarforest.org.
November 28 Holiday Tours
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special tours of Poplar Forest that feature holiday traditions in the early 19th century. Hot apple cider and cookies in the Museum Shop.
