Photographer Rob McDonald to Sign at Poplar Forest, May 15 -

Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest will host photographer Rob McDonald for a book-signing at the Museum Shop on Saturday, May 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mr. McDonald will talk with visitors and sign copies of his newest book, titled Poplar Forest.

Poplar Forest is a book of original photography that "explores the notion of retreat, of private space, which we all—even a man so great as Jefferson—require and seek instinctively." Featuring an original poem by Sam Witt, the sepia-toned photographs showcase Thomas Jefferson’s personal retreat and its unique surrounding landscape. Distinctive in every way, Poplar Forest will be published in 300 hand-sewn limited edition copies.

Rob McDonald holds a PhD in American Literature and has published many works on the literature and culture of the American South. He is a self-taught photographer, and currently an English professor and associate dean at Virginia Military Institute.

McDonald’s photographs are exhibited nationally and are included in several major museum and university collections. His previous books include Birdhouses (Horse & Buggy Press) and Birth Place (Nazraeli). For more on his work, visit www.robmcdonaldphotography.com.

A portion of the books proceeds will benefit the non-profit Corporation for Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest and the William J. Stockwell Scholarship at Virginia Military Institute.
