Virginia Garden Week: Restoring Jefferson’s Poplar Forest Landscape

April 20, 2010

Ornamental Landscape 2

On Tuesday, April 20th, Poplar Forest will be open for tours of the house and grounds in celebration of Virginia Garden Day in Lynchburg. Tour the octagonal house and explore the pre-restoration landscape with handheld devices that provide information about Jefferson's ornamental landscape, the farm and the plantation community at Poplar Forest through video and audio clips.

Jack Gary, Director of Archaeology and Landscapes will lead special landscape tours at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Learn more from Poplar Forest archaeologists as they prepare to investigate more fully Jefferson's ornamental landscape that he designed at Poplar Forest and take the first steps towards restoring the tree clumps, oval beds and rows of trees around the retreat house.

Gary will also unveil the first-ever, three-dimensional digital rendering of the ornamental landscape Jefferson designed around the house at Poplar Forest. Visitors will be able to see what the landscape was like, before it is restored, in a digital world - as though they were walking through it or flying over it.

The special landscape tours are included with the regular admission price. Present your Virginia Garden Week ticket to receive reduced admission for house and grounds tours ($7.00) and a Museum Shop discount (5%). Reservations for the landscape tour recommended. Please call (434) 534-8120 for more information.
