Art on the Lawn at Poplar Forest and Juried Plein Air Competition: April 28, 2012 (May 6 rain date)

We are currently gathering submissions for an artists’ retreat and juried plein air competition at Thomas Jefferson’s retreat home, Poplar Forest. We invite artists to be inspired by this special place where Jefferson came to seek solitude and tranquility and to interpret it with their unique talents and painting techniques. Our day of painting on Saturday, April 28 (May 6 rain date for all events) will culminate in an artists’ reception that evening when artists will share their work while enjoying a glass of wine. Twenty four paintings will be chosen by our juror to be shown at 2 venues- at the Poplar Forest Collector’s Preview Reception and at the First Friday’s June 1 opening at the Academy of Fine Arts in downtown Lynchburg. We are inviting artists from across Virginia to participate. The proceeds from the artists’ retreat and show will benefit Poplar Forest’s education programs and the Academy of Fine Arts. We ask artists to donate 50% to 100% of the purchase price of their work. Please indicate the percentage you’re willing to donate on the entry form.
Juror, Bill White, Emeritus Professor at Hollins University, received his MFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University and his BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts). White has received numerous accolades including Cabell Fellowship and Mellon Foundation grants, residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and the Cité International des Arts. His work has been shown in over 25 solo exhibitions, including the Bowery Gallery, NYC and over 85 invitational and group juried shows.

April 28: Art on the Lawn: 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. (May 6 rain date)
2:00 p.m Watercolor demonstration by artist, Solly Blank: free with regular tour admission
6:00 p.m. Artists’ judging and reception: (free to participating artists) and Collector’s Preview Party: ($35 per person). Reservations and Advance tickets required tickets may be purchased at http://www.eventbrite.com/event/3145455141 or by calling the Museum Shop at (434)534-8120. Collectors and the 24 artists whose works are chosen by the juror are invited to enjoy a wine and champagne dessert reception at Poplar Forest and be among the first to see and purchase paintings before the exhibit opens to the public, event is free to selected artists. (May 6 rain date for all events.)
May 21: Accepted artwork to be delivered by artists on May 21 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to the Academy of Fine Arts (Other arrangements may be made if necessary).
June 1: Friday opening at the Academy of Fine Arts Downtown Lynchburg
June 30: Academy of Fine Arts Show closes.
July 2-9: Artists and buyers to pick up art between 9am and 5pm (closed July 4) or arrange for shipping.
