Historic Drawing
Jefferson combined the classical elements he had studied and seen in Europe with his uniquely American ideas to create his architectural masterpiece, the house at his Poplar Forest plantation. Drawing is attributed to Jefferson’s workman, John Neilson. n.d.
Portrait by Thomas Sully
Jefferson designed Poplar Forest and had construction begun as he contemplated retirement from public life. His retirement from the presidency marked the beginning of his time to truly become the farmer and family patriarch he longed to be. The private persona of this founding father is thought to have been well reflected in this portrait done during his retirement.
Landscape Drawing
Jefferson created an octagonal villa retreat on a plantation he owned within sight of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The house was surrounded by an ornamental landscape designed by Jefferson. Adapted from an original painting by L. Diane Johnson
