Digging,
Learning and Teaching: Archaeology for Teachers at Poplar Forest
An intensive archaeology experience for
multidisciplinary teaching
2006 Dates: July
31st - August 4th
Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest and the
University of Virginia have partnered to offer a unique archaeology-based professional
development experience. By
exploring, interpreting and analyzing an archaeological
site, participants will engage in
multidisciplinary teaching and learning. Archaeology
provides the focal point from which educators develop strategies that will be
effective in a variety of school curricula for meeting the current SOLs.
The seminar’s multidisciplinary structure is designed for educators
at all levels. Participants will
learn to approach subjects thematically. Middle
and secondary teachers will find materials appropriate to the teaching of
subjects such as art, environmental and life sciences, mathematics and social
studies.
|
As a
hands-on seminar, participants will be involved in an ongoing archaeological
research project at Poplar Forest, with mornings spent in the field or
lab and afternoons spent in the classroom. Findings from the project will be used
as examples and will form the basis from which to develop teaching
materials.
The field
work component of the seminar will be led by Barbara Heath, Director
of Archaeology and Landscapes at Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest.
Milde Waterfall from the University of Virginia Curry School of
Education will work with
participants in developing educational content.
In addition, participants will engage in a follow-up meeting in September
or October, following completion of the field work component.
