A lunette window, an architectural element favored by Jefferson, lights the room.

Granddaughters Ellen and Cornelia, who often accompanied Jefferson to Poplar Forest, shared the alcove bed that divided this room.  

Slaves serving food walked from the kitchen in the wing through the bedroom in order to reach the dining room.   They used the east stair pavilion shown in the image at left.

The room's design duplicates that of Jefferson's bedchamber on the west side of the house.

The fireplace on the south end of the room (shown at left) is the only one of the 15 in the house that was never remodeled. Images below show construction details of the hearth.
