Witness History: An Early Engraving of the Declaration Arrives at Poplar Forest

In 1818, Benjamin Owen Tyler, a penmanship professor, published commemorative engravings of the Declaration of Independence. These engravings were the very first copies of the Declaration of Independence to include all signatures. The document is on loan to Poplar Forest thanks to the generosity of Benjamin Marchi, a member of Poplar Forest’s Board of Directors, and his wife, Jenna Marchi. Visit Poplar Forest throughout this important year to view one of the Nation’s founding documents and celebrate the Semiquincentennial at Thomas Jefferson’s retreat home. The display is available with general admission.
