Celebrating the Semiquincentennial

Along with other organizations throughout Virginia and the nation, Poplar Forest will celebrate this 250th anniversary—formally known as a semiquincentennial—through special events, programs, exhibits and a series of key initiatives, including:

  • 1776 The Musical
  • Independence Day Celebration
  • Jefferson’s Curiosities Series
  • Naturalization Ceremonies
  • A collaborative educational series focused on the Declaration of Independence presented in conjunction with partners around the Commonwealth of Virginia
    • Conrad M. Hall Symposium for Virginia History- Revolutions on October 4, 2025 at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond, VA
    • Feast of Reason at Democracy360 on October 17, 2025 at UVA’s Karsh Institute of Democracy and Monticello: The Jefferson School in Charlottesville, VA
    • Revolutionary Education in April 2026 at William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA
    • Independence Day on July 4, 2026 at Partner Sites
    • Jefferson’s Legacy in Late Summer 2026 at Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest in Bedford County, VA
  • Traveling exhibits:
    • Benjamin Owen Tyler handwritten reproduction of the Declaration of Independence (produced in 1818), complete with handwritten signatures (dates TBA)
    • Give Me Liberty: Virginia & the Forging of a Nation: A signature exhibition of Virginia’s 250th Commission; on loan at Poplar Forest October 12-November 23, 2026
  • Expanded programming including the relaunch of our popular Jefferson’s Curiosities series, focused on Jefferson’s many interests as we explore Jefferson’s legacy
  • On-site:
    • Ongoing conservation and maintenance of the Jefferson-era structures including repainting of the exterior and replacement of the wing roof deck to ensure Poplar Forest is looking its best as we prepare to welcome greater numbers of visitors
    • Restoring/reconstructing missing elements of the plantation landscape, specifically places and spaces inhabited by Poplar Forest’s enslaved community
